The following entry is strictly my opinion and based on my reading on the internet and horse papers.
Something I like to do on the internet is visit internet sites that have horses for sale. It's always fun to window shop and see what is available. Since the economy is on such a downward spiral many horses are listed for sale or even free. There are high quality horses that are priced way below their true value. I have found that even a quality animal that is being offered for next to nothing is hard to be placed right now. Horse rescues are full and can't take anymore without compromising the care of the ones they have. People's main concern is providing for their families and that is so hard.
While there are still many stallions being offered for breeding I think it's time that we be more selective in what and when we breed. It's not that these stallions aren't nice, some are, some aren't, but we have to think if the foals will actually sell. How long will it take to sell them? And how much money will it cost to properly train and maintain them till they do sell?
I have actually watched a few shows on RFtv that have had professionals state they have cut back on how many horses they are breeding. They are trying to keep the high dollar animals refined. So, as much as I like to see the foals playing and having fun I think it's time to rethink our goals.
